CD Baby

Pay once per release instead of every year, and give up 9 per cent of digital revenue.

CD Baby charges $9.99 for a single and $14.99 for an album, one-off, with no annual fee. In exchange it keeps 9 per cent of digital distribution revenue; the artist keeps 91 per cent.

This is the opposite trade to the subscription services. For a release that earns very little, a one-off fee with a 9 per cent share costs more over time than nothing at all. For a catalogue you want online permanently without a standing charge, it is the simpler arrangement.
